Constant hunger despite eating: what happens in the brain and what predisposition has to do with it
The key points at a glance
If you eat a normal meal and feel hungry again an hour later, that is not a character flaw but a question of signals. Ghrelin, a signaling substance produced by the body, increases appetite, while leptin dampens it - a paraphrase of Skoracka et al., 2025. How clearly you feel satiated is partly determined by your biology.
This article explains the differences between hunger, appetite, and satiation, the role sleep and fiber play, and the extent to which body weight is linked to genetic factors in twin studies. It cites figures with their year and source and explains where the data end.
If you want to know what is behind the feeling, start with Chapter 1. The documented figures are in Chapter 4. Whether your sense of satiation has a genetic component, and what a DNA test can and cannot show about it, is covered in Chapter 7.

Constant hunger despite eating: what's happening
You have eaten. Plate empty, kitchen tidied, an hour has passed - and the thought of food is back. Not as a craving for anything specific, but as pressure. Some call this the food voice, while others talk about binge-eating episodes. In the rest of the text, we will use hunger and, when referring to loss of control, binge-eating episodes.
The first sentence you probably tell yourself is: I can't control myself. That is exactly where the misconception lies. Hunger, appetite, and satiation are three different things, and none of them is a character trait.
Hunger is the body's drive to eat something. Appetite is the desire to eat, which can also arise without a physical need - just looking at a shop window is enough. Satiation is the counterpart: the signal that enough has arrived. How clearly you receive this signal varies from person to person, and that is the core of this article.
Ghrelin and leptin: two signaling substances with opposing roles
A review of leptin and ghrelin in overweight describes both as antagonists in appetite regulation: ghrelin, a signaling substance produced by the body, increases appetite and food intake, while leptin dampens both. This is a paraphrase of Skoracka et al., 2025.
The same paper describes a condition known as leptin resistance: In people with increased body weight, the biological response to leptin may fail to occur even though leptin levels are high. The dampening signal is therefore present; it simply does not get through. Paraphrased from Skoracka et al., 2025.
What follows from this is uncomfortable and relieving at the same time. Uncomfortable because the signal cannot be turned up simply through willpower. Relieving because what you feel is not imaginary. If what you are mainly missing is a feeling of satiety, you can find the relevant context in our guide no feeling of satiety; if you are looking for concrete steps for everyday life, they are in the tips for dealing with cravings.
Key message
Hunger and satiety are signals, not a question of character: ghrelin increases appetite, while leptin dampens it (paraphrased from Skoracka et al., 2025). How strongly the satiety signal comes through has a genetic component (Wardle et al., 2008; Elks et al., 2012) - and sleep and dietary fiber are the two levers for which documented figures are available (Spiegel et al., 2004; German Nutrition Society, 2021).
What dietary fiber has to do with it
Dietary fiber is found in plant-based foods and is not broken down by the small intestine. The German Nutrition Society lists it under the alternative name roughage and describes what it influences - the satiety effect is explicitly included in the list.
Documented source
“Dietary fiber - also known as roughage - influences the transit time of food in the stomach and intestines, the volume and consistency of stool […] satiety effect, altered nutrient absorption, and prebiotic effect.”
German Nutrition Society
Reference values for dietary fiber, 2021
The same source gives a reference value: at least 30 grams of dietary fiber per day for adults. The German Nutrition Society explicitly states that this reference value applies equally to women and men (2021).
Two sentences to put this in context before it becomes a promise. First: “Satiety effect” is a described property, not a quantity prescription and not a promise that your hunger will disappear. Second: The reference value indicates how much intake is recommended, not what happens to you when you reach it. The source says no more, and therefore neither does this text.
Four Levers and What Is Established
The following overview separates three things that get mixed up online: what a source actually says, what number is available for it, and what you can do with it. Where the source contains no number, the table contains none.
| Lever | What Is Established | The Number | What You Can Do with This |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunger and Satiety Signals | Ghrelin, a messenger produced by the body, increases appetite, while leptin suppresses it; at higher body weight, the response to leptin may be absent even when levels are high - leptin resistance (paraphrased from Skoracka et al., 2025) | No number in this source | Read your sensations as signals instead of treating them as a question of willpower |
| Sleep | After two nights of shortened sleep, leptin levels were lower, ghrelin levels higher, and hunger and appetite higher than after long nights (paraphrased from Spiegel et al., 2004) | Ghrelin +28%, leptin −18%, hunger +24%, appetite +23% - in twelve young men (Spiegel et al., 2004) | Consider short nights as a possible contributing factor before blaming yourself for lacking discipline |
| Fiber | Fiber, meaning indigestible components of plant-based foods, influences satiety according to reference values (German Nutrition Society, 2021) | Guideline: at least 30 g per day for adults (German Nutrition Society, 2021) | Assess your previous intake honestly instead of guessing |
| Predisposition | Children with two risk copies of an FTO variant - a specific genetic difference - reported a significantly lower sense of satiety (paraphrased from Wardle et al., 2008); body weight is strongly associated with genetic factors in twin studies (Elks et al., 2012) | 3,337 British children (Wardle et al., 2008); median heritability of BMI 0.75, range 0.47 to 0.90 (Elks et al., 2012). Heritability means the proportion of differences between people attributable to genes; BMI is the ratio of weight to height | Assess your own starting point as a probability, not a verdict |
The Numbers Available
Four numbers underpin this article. Each comes from a named source with a year, and each has a stated limitation.
Hunger in Numbers
+28 %
higher ghrelin levels after two nights of shortened sleep, measured in twelve young men (Spiegel et al., 2004)
−18 %
lower leptin levels in the same small study; hunger was 24% higher and appetite 23% higher (Spiegel et al., 2004)
30 g
At least 30 g of fiber per day as a guideline for adults, equally for women and men (German Nutrition Society, 2021)
about three-quarters
Median of heritability estimates for BMI from twin studies, range 0.47 to 0.90 (Elks et al., 2012)
Source: Spiegel et al., 2004; German Nutrition Society, 2021; Elks et al., 2012
The last tile needs an explanation because the term is misunderstood. Heritability describes what proportion of the differences between people can statistically be attributed to genetic factors. It says nothing about what proportion of your personal weight is innate. A twin study compares identical and fraternal twin pairs because this makes it possible to separate genetic differences from environmental ones. BMI is the body mass index, the ratio of body weight to height.
Three misconceptions about constant hunger
The three statements in the left column are commonly heard in everyday life. On the right is what the evidence says about them - and where it ends.
Misconception and evidence
Widespread
“Constant hunger is a lack of willpower.”
Proven
In a study of 3,337 British children, carriers of two risk copies of the FTO variant reported a significantly lower sense of satiety than the other children (paraphrased from Wardle et al., 2008). The feeling is therefore partly predisposed.
Widespread
“Anyone who eats enough is full.”
Proven
At higher body weight, the biological response to the suppressive signal leptin may fail to occur even though leptin levels are elevated - described as leptin resistance (paraphrased from Skoracka et al., 2025).
Widespread
“A DNA test tells me why I am hungry.”
Proven
A DNA analysis shows predisposition as a probability in population groups. It does not measure hunger or provide a diagnosis. The connection between the FTO variant and feelings of satiety is a group finding from a study of children (Wardle et al., 2008), not a statement about you.
When you should call instead of reading
An article can provide context. It cannot see what is going on with you. For three situations, therefore: close the book and pick up the phone.
These three points belong in a doctor's office
Hunger with physical accompanying signs
Persistent hunger together with unintended weight loss, a racing heart, or heavy sweating should be assessed by a doctor.
Binge eating with loss of control
Anyone experiencing binge eating with loss of control can find help from a doctor or psychotherapist.
A hunger you don't recognize
If the feeling is new, note when it began and the time of day, along with what you ate beforehand. These notes are what support a medical consultation; they do not replace self-diagnosis. What else matters is a question for your doctor’s office.
The doctor is not an opposing party here, but the next point of contact. You enter the conversation with observations rather than a suspicion, which shortens the process.
Chapter at a glance
If persistent hunger is accompanied by unintended weight loss or a physical sign such as a racing heart, seeing a doctor is the next step. For binge eating with loss of control, a medical or psychotherapeutic practice can help. If the hunger is new for you, monitor it and keep notes before changing anything. Notes help prepare for your appointment; they are not a self-diagnosis.
What predisposition contributes - and what a DNA test shows
Predisposition means a starting point you did not choose. Two papers provide an indication of its magnitude for this topic. The first examined 3,337 British children: Those who carried two risk copies of the FTO variant rs9939609 reported a significantly lower sense of satiety, and the association with higher body fat was partly explained by precisely this sense of satiety. Paraphrased from Wardle et al., 2008. This is a study of children - that is part of the context for the figure.
The second paper summarized twin and family studies. For BMI, heritability estimates from twin studies ranged from 0.47 to 0.90, with a median of 0.75 - about three quarters (Elks et al., 2012). Family studies arrived at lower values. The range is broad, and it is the more honest part of the figure. Hunger is a signal. How loud it is also has to do with your predisposition.

Your genes are not to blame: Genetic variants describe probabilities in groups, not a predetermined outcome for you. We explain how DNA, hunger, and weight are connected overall in DNA, Hunger, and Weight.
What a DNA test reveals about satiety and appetite
This is where mybody®x (MYBODY Lab GmbH) comes in, because precisely this classification is what a DNA test can provide - nothing more. According to the product page, the WeightLoss | SLIM DNA test analyzes more than 80 gene variations, meaning deviations at specific points in the genetic material, and summarizes them in 24 analysis reports spanning around 140 pages. These include reports on satiety and appetite. This test does not provide an assessment of individual foods.
The test does not measure hunger and does not provide a diagnosis. It shows predisposition. If you also want a ready-made everyday framework, mybody®x offers the DNA metabolic analysis with a 28-day plan and recipe book.

What you can do now
Two approaches in this article are backed by a source with a figure: sleep and fiber. Both are levers, not switches. First, take a look at your nights - not as a reproach, but as an observation. And look at how much plant-based food ends up on your plate throughout the day. Both can be recorded over a week without changing anything.
The second step is keeping a record: when hunger strikes, how long ago you ate, and how well you slept. After seven days, you will have something in hand that is worth more than any retrospective self-assessment. If your issue is more a craving for sweets than hunger itself, read instead about what is behind cravings for sweets.
And the third step, if you want to know what your starting point looks like: a DNA analysis assesses your predisposition. It does not make decisions for you. It only tells you what you are starting with - and that is more than the phrase "pull yourself together" has ever offered.
Frequently asked questions
Is constant hunger after eating a sign of a lack of willpower?
No. How strongly the satiety signal is perceived is partly determined by individual predisposition. In a study of 3,337 British children, carriers of two risk copies of the FTO variant reported a significantly weaker feeling of satiety than the other children (in essence, according to Wardle et al., 2008). Other signals, such as ghrelin and leptin, also increase or dampen appetite, respectively (in essence, according to Skoracka et al., 2025). Your perception is therefore information about your body, not your character.
How are short nights connected to hunger?
In a small study of twelve young men, after two nights of shortened sleep, leptin levels were 18 percent lower, ghrelin levels 28 percent higher, reported hunger 24 percent higher, and appetite 23 percent higher than after long nights (in essence, according to Spiegel et al., 2004). Twelve participants is a small number, and the study describes young men. Nevertheless, it is useful as an indication that sleep is an influencing factor.
How much fiber is recommended for adults?
The German Nutrition Society recommends at least 30 grams of fiber per day as a guideline for adults and states that this guideline applies equally to women and men (2021). Fiber consists of components of plant-based foods that the small intestine does not break down; the reference values explicitly list its satiating effect among its effects. What the guideline does not say is what happens to you personally when you reach it.
Can a DNA test measure why I am hungry?
No. A DNA analysis shows genetic predisposition as a probability in population groups. It does not measure hunger or provide a diagnosis. The WeightLoss | According to the product page, the mybody®x SLIM DNA Test analyzes more than 80 gene variations and summarizes them in 24 analysis reports, including reports on satiety and appetite. The result is a starting point for your own decisions and for a conversation, not a finding about your current condition.
When should I see a doctor about constant hunger?
As soon as persistent hunger is accompanied by unintended weight loss or heavy sweating, it belongs in a medical practice. In cases of binge eating with loss of control, a medical or psychotherapeutic practice is the right place to turn. Even if the feeling of hunger is new to you and you cannot find an explanation, making an appointment is the more sensible approach than continuing to search online. Bring your notes with you: the time and your last meal. This will shorten the conversation.
