At the upper end of this range, losing five kilograms in five weeks would be possible—but this explicitly applies “depending on starting weight” and describes a case involving a considerably higher starting weight rather than the typical case.

What studies actually show

The most sober benchmark comes from the studies reviewed by IQWiG. Participants in structured weight-loss programs lost between about 3 and 8 kilograms within 6 to 12 months, averaging around 5 to 6 kilograms.

Five kilograms is therefore almost exactly what studies find on average—after six months to a full year, with a program and support. Anyone who sets the same goal for six weeks is not being ambitious, but planning contrary to the available evidence.

The effect of exercise has also been documented: After twelve months, physically active participants had lost nearly two kilograms more than those who changed only their diet. Their activity consisted of 30 to 45 minutes of moderately strenuous exercise 3 to 5 times a week, such as brisk walking.

How to measure correctly

That is why a fixed routine under the same conditions makes sense: the same day of the week, at the same time, before breakfast, and after using the toilet. What you compare then is not the individual reading, but the trend over four weeks.

Daily fluctuations of one to two kilograms are normal. They are caused by fluid levels, salt intake, and digestion, and say nothing about fat mass. Anyone who weighs themselves daily and interprets every change will mainly end up frustrated—and make decisions based on noise.
