Signs of a significantly elevated level

Significantly elevated prolactin is associated with documented signs, which differ between the sexes.


Slightly elevated usually means medication. Significantly elevated means a different order of magnitude.

In women, the MSD Manual describes galactorrhea, often accompanied by amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea and symptoms of estrogen deficiency, including pain during intercourse and reduced libido (as of June 2025).

Why the unit on the report matters

In practical terms: measure in the morning, while at rest, and record the time to the minute. A hectic morning is a poor time for measurement here too.

Prolactin and the cycle
