These three levers—dietary changes, physical activity, and behavior change—are the starting point for any serious assessment of at-home weight-loss tests. At most, a test can help target one of these levers more precisely. It cannot replace any of them.

The additional effect of exercise on its own is modest, but real, and comes in addition to dietary changes rather than replacing them. According to IQWiG, “after twelve months, physically active participants had lost just under two kilograms more than those who only changed their diet.”

The World Health Organization quantifies how much exercise is appropriate: 150 to 300 minutes of moderate or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity per week, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days (WHO, 2020).

For everyday life, this recommendation can be broken down into manageable units. Instead of completing the entire weekly amount on a single day, it should sensibly be spread over several days of the week—supplemented by muscle-strengthening exercises for the major muscle groups on at least two of those days. The WHO recommendation deliberately leaves open which type of exercise is used: walking, cycling, swimming, or strength training all count. The decisive factor is the total weekly duration, not a particular discipline.

According to IQWiG, meal replacements “lead to greater weight loss of around 10 to 15 kilograms”—but this is a medically supervised intervention, not an alternative that a home test could replace or trigger. The same applies here: A DNA test does not change these figures because it neither eats nor exercises.

That is the real link between weight loss and energy: both complaints can have the same medical origin.
