What does a DNA metabolism test actually do?
A DNA metabolism test examines a defined selection of individual genetic variants and uses them to derive dietary and exercise recommendations. It does not sequence your entire genome and does not provide a medical diagnosis.
SNPs: What exactly is analyzed
The analysis examines so-called SNPs (single-nucleotide polymorphisms, pronounced “snips”). These are sites in the genome where people differ in a single building block. Such variants are normal and widespread—they are not a defect but an expression of natural diversity.
When it comes to weight, variants in genes such as FTO, MC4R, TCF7L2, or PPARG are often examined. However, each one explains only a very small part of the differences between people. Body weight is a polygenic trait: Hundreds of genetic loci act together, along with diet, physical activity, sleep, and medication.
From cheek swab to laboratory result
For most providers, samples are collected at home using a cheek swab. The kit contains swabs, instructions, and a return envelope. The sample is pseudonymized—the laboratory works with a code, not your name.
In the laboratory, the DNA is isolated and the defined genetic loci are analyzed. Because DNA does not change over the course of a person’s life, such a test only needs to be performed once: A second analysis of the same variants produces the same result. What the report actually says
A typical report organizes the findings into chapters covering the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats, satiety and appetite, response to exercise, micronutrient requirements, and tolerances such as lactose or caffeine. This results in specific recommendations, such as a macronutrient distribution or lists of foods.
Important: These recommendations are probability statements at the group level, not individual predictions. If the report states that a variant is associated with a stronger feeling of hunger, it was linked to this in studies on average across the group. What does the evidence say—both sides
The research provides two findings: one concerning the genetic assignment of diets, and one concerning the effect of personalization itself.
DIETFITS (Gardner et al., JAMA 2018): the sobering finding
DIETFITS directly tested whether genes could predict the appropriate diet. Over twelve months, 609 overweight adults were randomly assigned to a healthy low-fat or low-carbohydrate diet. Beforehand, a genotype pattern intended to indicate the better diet type had been determined for each person.
According to Gardner et al. (JAMA, 2018), participants in the low-fat group lost an average of 5.3 kg, while those in the low-carbohydrate group lost 6.0 kg—a difference of 0.7 kg that was not statistically significant. The interaction between diet and genotype pattern was also not significant (p = 0.20).
The enormous range within both groups was revealing: some people lost significant weight, while others gained weight. The difference apparently lay neither in the type of diet nor in genotype, but in how consistently participants followed the changes.
Food4Me (Celis-Morales et al., 2017): Personalization works, genes add little
The European Food4Me study examined whether personalized recommendations changed behavior more than general advice. Over six months, 1,607 adults from seven countries received either general recommendations or personalization based on diet, measurements, or genotype.
According to Celis-Morales et al. (International Journal of Epidemiology, 2017), all personalized groups improved their diets more than the control group. However, adding physical measurements and genotype provided no additional measurable benefit over nutrition-based personalization alone.
The findings support personalization—and strip the genetic add-on of its special status. The benefit emerged where people received individualized feedback.

According to a review in the specialist journal Nutrients (2024), many individual studies do report positive effects from nutrigenetic counseling, but professional organizations such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics do not recommend genetic tests as a standalone measure for weight loss. The review identifies regulatory standards, evidence of clinical validity, and the training of professionals who interpret the results as areas requiring further development.
