Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide, especially among women and children.

The most common symptoms of iron deficiency are paleness, tiredness, fatigue, headaches, hair loss, a faster heartbeat or shortness of breath.

Iron is also important for cell formation and cellular respiration. This means that the oxygen we breathe into our lungs fuses with red hemoglobin with the help of vitamin D. It is then transported throughout the body by the blood and used in the cells to generate energy.

    Insight into your iron-ferritin value

    • Recognize what your body is missing

Ferritin ensures that iron can be stored in the body. The amount of ferritin in the blood therefore indicates whether the body is well supplied with iron.

This is not unimportant because the body needs sufficient iron to transport oxygen to the cells.

If you test your ferritin level, you will immediately know whether there is an iron deficiency or an elevated level in your body.

    • Do you know your values?

Children and especially women need twice as much iron as men. The increased iron requirement in women is caused in particular by menstruation, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Also affected are vegans, vegetarians, athletes and people with intestinal problems that hinder the absorption of nutrients from food (e.g. celiac disease).

    What is ferritin?

Ferritin is a protein and the main form of iron stored in cells. Most of the ferritin is found in the liver, spleen and bone marrow. A small part is in the blood and represents the total ferritin in iron diagnostics. A ferritin blood test shows the state of iron stores and whether there is a deficiency or excess. An abnormal result of the rapid test means that the ferritin concentration in the blood is below 30 ng/ml and there is a possible iron deficiency.

    How does iron deficiency arise?

Iron deficiency occurs when there are not enough red blood cells in the blood, resulting in low levels of hemoglobin, the main protein involved in transporting oxygen throughout the body. Iron is an important component of hemoglobin. Iron deficiency, which can occur during pregnancy, growth, inadequate iron intake, inadequate absorption, or blood loss (menstruation, abnormal bleeding, ulcers, etc.), has a huge impact on health. There are also people who have trouble absorbing iron from their diet, for example due to intestinal problems such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease. Low ferritin may also indicate hypothyroidism or vitamin C deficiency. Some patients with restless legs syndrome may experience low ferritin levels, but these do not necessarily accompany anemia, but may be due to low iron stores just before anemia.

What do I get and how long does the test take?

The iron-ferritin self-test includes the following:

    • 1 test cassette
    • Instructions
    • 2 lancets
    • 1 buffer solution
    • 1 alcohol pad

After the test has been performed, it takes about 5-10 minutes for the result to be available.

When should you take a test?

The ferritin test can be performed if symptoms such as paleness, fatigue, headache, rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath during physical exertion are present, especially in women during pregnancy or in cases of excessive bleeding during menstruation.

The test can be performed at any time of day, but not during illness, acute inflammation, or spleen or liver damage. Abnormal results can occur even if there is no iron deficiency.

What consequences can iron deficiency have?

Iron deficiency can lead to various consequences, including:

    • Anemia: The lack of iron causes fewer red blood cells to be produced, which leads to a reduction in the transport of oxygen in the body. Symptoms of anemia can include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath and palpitations
    • Growth disorders: Iron is necessary for normal growth and development of the body, especially in children and adolescents. Iron deficiency can lead to growth retardation and physical weakness
    • Weakened immune system: Iron is necessary for the immune system to function. Iron deficiency can increase the risk of infections
    • Poor mental and cognitive performance: Iron deficiency can also affect the brain, especially in children and pregnant women. Iron deficiency has been shown to be associated with reduced cognitive performance and a higher likelihood of learning and behavioral problems
